Nature has been integral to The Ocean Race since we first set sail in 1973. It's at the heart of what we do - the race track that we compete on and the wind that powers our boats - but it is deteriorating fast. We are working tirelessly to support ocean health and have a growing focus on influencing ocean policy, particularly through our series of high-level events: The Ocean Race Summits. Our global event is working to influence policy to support a healthy ocean at a local, national and global level. Our ambitions are high, just as they are for our round-the-world Race.

The Ocean Advocacy Communications Manager’s main focus will be to create and execute a communications strategy to help support and drive the policy aims of The Ocean Race Summit and our wider Racing with Purpose Sustainability Programme. You will support the content development of The Ocean Race Summits, their delivery, and maximise the policy impact of the Summits and other policy related events. Essential to this is pushing, in a strategic and tactical way, The Ocean Race as a voice, platform and advocate for Ocean Health, as a credible contributor to ocean science, and as a thought leader in sustainability and sports globally.

You will have experience of communications targeted to decision-makers, including heads of state, ministers and businesses and understand the best channels and tactics to reach these influential audiences.

Additionally, you will support campaign creation, implementation, other communications and storytelling efforts of the Race including supporting activation of the partnerships with our partners.

You will be formally part of the Communications Department, and you will be an essential part of the team delivering The Ocean Race Summits.

This role includes the following:

Key responsibilities

  • To support the development of The Ocean Race’s policy related ocean health and sustainability communications strategy, and where needed, targeted campaigns, engagement and communications strategies directed to policy makers in various topics and across multiple regions.
  • To work with host cities, partners and teams to maximise policy impact.
  • To support in developing strategic and tactical approaches for The Ocean Race engagement with governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations and philanthropic institutions.
  • TAs part of The Ocean Race Communications team, to support the overall communication of the company, and in particular together with the Sustainability Communications Manager;
  • To ensure the Race’s sustainability narrative, personality or voice is included in all relevant external communications;
  • To work with the editorial team to develop and implement the communications strategy for the storytelling of the Race’s external-facing sustainability programmes.
  • To ensure that The Ocean Race policy related communications, with institutions and media, are correct, timely and contribute to overall strategy;
  • To contribute to creative discussions on how to engage with external stakeholders in order to maximise policy impact.

Content development

  • Contribute to content in The Ocean Race Summits and other policy related events by contributing with ideas for themes, source speakers etc;
  • Working with the communications team in devising the social media strategy (defining hashtags, content, keyfacts, blogs and posts); and planning content for our platforms, including the website, image library, app, etc, and support in the creation of original content for business-related and external communications purposes (written, video, photos, social media graphics, infographics) for all aspects of the sustainability programme.

Minimum requirements

  • A proven track record in international advocacy and policy influencing
  • Creative and visionary approach to communicating for purpose and for good.
  • Extensive experience in communicating to a broad range of audiences and through a variety of platforms.
  • A passion for sustainability issues, ocean health-related topics, and the SDGs.
  • Experience of working in a digital-first environment and preferably with experience leading the digital storytelling development of policy-related messaging;
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with experience in published writing/blogging, a plus
  • Knowledge of design software ie Adobe, Indesign;
  • Ability to work in a team and take either a service and support, or leadership approach, whichever is needed.
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills, to keep multiple deadlines and projects on track, and engaging and communicating with the team to ensure all harmonious and effective outcomes.
  • Motivated to communicate inspirational stories to our key audiences to support our strategic aims

  • Be a team player with an ability to work under pressure
  • Fluent English (written and spoken). Other languages are a plus.

  • Able to relocate to Alicante, Spain.
  • EU national or ability to, in a short period of time, acquire necessary EU working permit.
